Illegally fired its talent and lost
The Pluse and WHYY illegally fired one of their staff for having his own stand up show. Then they wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars of listener’s donated funds on lawyers to fight this. Well, WHYY and The Pulse lost! Amazingly disappointing that an NPR member station would spend its funds fighting its own employees union.

    Gem
Of all the podcasts I subscribe to (mostly public radio shows, but not exclusively), “The Pulse” is the one I find consistently interesting and worth hearing to the episode’s end. The subject matter is fresh, even unexpected at times, and well produced. The host, Maiken Scott, is easy to listen to. Other podcast producers, who seem to think just throwing a couple talkers before a microphone to improvise, would do well to study this one to see how it’s done.

    Evolved in the wrong direction
I started listening years ago, the topics are always interesting, showing things under various lights. It’s been almost a year that the quality has declined. Each story told to illustrate a topic drags on for 10-15 min before getting to the point, not bringing anything interesting to the table while doing so. Each episode has become a drag. Sad, as this show used to be so interesting.

    HSCT works for MS
Thank you for sharing Jessie’s story. This could have been my story…except my husband has stayed by my side throughout my MS journey. I went to Mexico in April 2017 for HSCT. I had been living with MS for over 16 years and didn't fit the trial criteria in the US. There are thousands of us who have gone and are doing great! Dr Ruiz is using a non-myelo protocol because it is less risky and still highly effective. I have been off all meds for 4 and a half years, I can run or bike for miles, lift weights and have no MS progression, my MRIs are stable. Freedman is uninformed and can’t accept that his theories are wrong!

Could Two Science Shows Be Tied?
The Pulse is now my favorite science podcast. Radio Lab is next. Funny, I majored in English and taught it. However when it came time to declare majors, I chose between biology and English. So this podcast is helping fulfill my need tone up on science information. Finding the Pulse this year, I’ve listened to many of the shows in the archives. The Pulse reporters really dig out their information, and I’ve learned amazing new things. I love to listen to Miken Scott’s voice as she has a delightful sense of humor and down to earth way of speaking.

Good info but the vocal fry...
Edit 10/23/20: Please LABEL your reruns as such! Today’s episode is a rerun, and it would have been so simple to state in the show notes, “This episode originally aired 3/13/20.” I like that each episode is a number of mini-topics reported by different people under one theme. I don’t like the vocal fry of several reporters; one is so bad I find myself not paying any attention to the content because all I can think about is how irritating her voice is. When your job is speaking, your voice should be pleasant, and if it’s not, sign up for a class with a voice coach! The Pulse would get five stars if I didn’t have to listen to people who sound like Lurch on The Addams Family.

    ❤️LOVE The Pulse!❤️
This show is incredible! I’ve learned so much from the many different episodes. I’ve lea her about experiments, animals, movements and psychical phenomena I never knew about before. I love how each episode is broken into little “mini stories” made by different reporters, though they’re all connected by a theme. Everyone does a wonderful job— this podcast has really enriched my life!

You can learn to stop the vocal fry
Great show but with just a couple voice training classes with a speech pathologist you could learn to sustain your breath and greatly improve the tone of your speaking voice. Good luck.

    Work-ethic show
This episode was a non-sequitur for the vast majority of people in blue collar work where “radical non-compliance” is in no way an option. Tech hasn’t changed the Taylorism dominating their work lives, just the means and the new reach into the slacker-privileged white collar world. Also, the deployment of Weber was half-baked at best as a supposed precursor of work-life balance premised on internal values beyond the labor theory of value.

Great podcast... but that weird sound!!
Always interesting. But in the intro, there is a sound that can only be described as “slapping a wet fish”. Can you kill that?

    Great podcast
I've described this podcast as feeling like Radiolab+Science Friday with a Philly area vibe. Really interesting stories and great way to discover stuff around me.

    Informative show
As an animal activist and vegan, II enjoyed the "Meat Show" episode of The Pulse. It's a very well-produced, informative and entertaining show. Whether you agree with all the scientific practices involved in the health-care industry or not, it's important to know what's going on, and this show covers it all. Well-done!
  • @jay_lass

The best new NPR pod I've heard in ages! Science, health, culture. Stories told w/wit & empathy. I adore this one.

    Best Podcast
As a recent science graduate who currently doesn't work in science; this podcast lets me rekindle my passion for science and remind me why I love it every week with fun and interesting stories

    Stories you can relate to!
Maiken and her team are so talented and dedicated. You need to subscribe to this - step away from the force fed mainstream. Shut off the virtual world for a while and turn on the REAL!

    Great source!
Very well put together informative podcast. Working in the medical field I love anything that lets me learn without feeling like I am bogged down with information. This podcast is intriguing and the anecdotes are wonderful. Hats off!

    Great Show, But
Great show, BUT I absolutely HATE the intro. It's auditory chaos, it hurts my brain and I have to skip through it every time. Other than that, great show! In my top 10.

    The Podcast You Save
I often play podcasts in the background while doing other things around the house. Not this podcast. This podcast, I save. I carve out a chunk of time each week when I can actually listen to the thought-provoking commentary, the witty jokes, even the expertly produced interludes between stories. I once laughed so hard I forgot I was learning. No joke - it's a brilliant 60 minutes that spans the health and science spectrum from crucial to quirky.

    I <3 the pulse
Great podcast! I love the compelling and sometimes very personal storytelling style of the show and Maiken Scott is so fun! I feel like I am always learning about something that would be difficult to understand otherwise and as a “science curious” person I really enjoy the themed shows---the “thinking inside the box” and “love & lust” episodes are my all time faves.

Great podcast! I love the compelling and sometimes very personal storytelling style of the show and Maiken Scott is so fun. I feel like I am always learning about something that would be difficult to understand if I were to read about it in the New York Times/other news publication and as a “science curious” person I really enjoy the themed shows---the “thinking inside the box” and “love & lust” episodes are my all time faves.

    An essential
This my favorite WHYY program. Listen on my old fashioned radio at work. Now as a podcast I don't need to miss it because of a meeting.
  • Unami Queen
    My weekly fix...
I admit to being a bit of a geek when it comes to medical information and issues, so I have discovered that this program is perfect for me. It is always relevant, never boring, speaks to the average person, and puts issues in a relevant context. I couldn't be more pleased that it's available.

    Fantastic science and health podcast
The pulse has stories that connect you to the human side of science and health. They also ask really interesting questions, and go in depth into topics that don't get enough attention in the normal health media landscape. I especially enjoy that the reporting is of such high quality and that each week is a similar theme!
  • Neda Frayha
    Excellent story telling
Smart, thoughtful, funny stories about our bodies, health, and science. Done in a human, accessible way. I look forward to it every week.

    Awesome
Love this show. It's fun AND I learn stuff. Woo hoo. They cover new stories and ideas, not the same stuff we have heard a million times before.
  • pubradionerd
More people should know about this!
I really enjoy The Pulse with Maiken Scott. There’s no other show out there that is really taking deep audio dives into the health and science world, and that’s probably for the best — I mean nobody could do it as well as The Pulse does! Highly recommend to everyone I talk to!
  • Parapluie1
    Great storytelling
There is some really great storytelling on this show. I love how the reporters try to find ways in to stories that yield surprises. You can tell that they are learning something, too, not just us, which is more engaging than experts lecturing us from the ivory tower.

  • Dedicated TAL nerd.
    Amazing resource.
This show is fantastic, informative, and accessible. So proud that this comes from my hometown, Philly! An essential part of my listening and learning routine.

    Refreshing take on health
The Pulse constantly produces episodes that delve into complicated health and science issues, making it all digestible and fun to listen to. It’s never boring to listen to The Pulse. One week you’ll get a 20-minute dive into the history of Legionnaire’s disease, the next, an hour totally dedicated to pets and animals. The Pulse crew brings health and science to the ground level by focusing on character-centric stories that grab my ear.
  • Amira144

    Smart, entertaining and important
There are quite a few excellent radio programs/podcasts out there. Politics, entertainment, sports and travel dominate but science lags as a topic. The science of mental health even more so. It's great to have a local broadcast like this that really focuses on the innovations and changes (or lack of change) in the world of health and science. Maiken and her team cover an amazing range of topics: NFL concussions, Flint water crisis, Katrina anniversary, trauma of first responders, yoga in the workplace, Zika outbreak. One thing for sure, it's never ever boring.
