Far Flung with Saleem Reshamwala

by TED

Far Flung with Saleem Reshamwala is a journey across the globe in search of the world's most surprising and imaginative ideas. It's not a travel show, exactly. It's a deep dive into the ideas that shape a particular spot on the map, brought to you by local journalists and creators. Weave through the streets of Bangkok with a motorcycle midwife. Time-travel with dinosaurs behind a hardware store in New Jersey. Meet a guy who dresses up as a luchador to protect citizens from traffic in Mexico City. Drop in, listen up, dig deep.

(And yes, we used to be called Pindrop!)

    Relevant & transporting
Travel podcast 2.0. This is such an amazing project. You really get to know a place through its history and people. I’ve learned so much about cultures, inequalities, environmental issues, and so much more. I definitely recommend this podcast if you love learning about places and people.

    Inspiring and Interesting
I really enjoyed all of these, especially Black Utopia and Science Sky. The idea both of spiritual utopia and building for the future was exciting, along with the precise measuring of the past and being able to interview indigenous cultures while they’re still here was illuminating. I really hope you come back with more episodes!

Amazing Life Lessons -Black Utopia episode
I was so moved and heartening by this story of Soul City, but most of all the idea of “Active Hope”! It touched me deeply the founders soaring enthusiasm to hope and to work! The idea of being a part of something so big that you live in a spiritual utopia is Amazing! This is how I want to live!

    Awesome Content
I’m so happy to have discovered this podcast! It’s informative, educational, inspiring, and entertaining. Listening to the Lima episode was so enlightening. I’ve been to Peru five times and had no idea about the amazing music scene. Through the episode, I learned more about the history, society, and culture of a place I’ve been to many times. I’m excited to listen to more episodes and learn more about the world we live in and the people we share it with. Thank you for this enlightening and inspiring podcast!!

    Seriously great
In a time when everyone has a podcast, this one stands out. Part travel, part culture, part human story, it’s well-constructed and compelling.
  • NickRuszk
    Completely eye opening!
Another outstanding project by TED. Makes me feel more in touch with the global community. Learning new perspectives from around the world makes me more grateful and inspired to engage with my own life. Saleem is a fantastic guide who asks the right questions and learns along aside us.

    Recent Favorite!
This podcast is everything I’ve needed right now and more! It’s provocative, original and captures the essence of some of my favorite shows like Parts Unknown.

    Expected Better From TED
Love the idea and concept of this show. And the host has a friendly voice. But the guy he interviewed about Bangkok just said so many things that were inaccurate. If you’re going to explain things about another culture, get your facts right.
  • D. Murphetsky
    Simply magnificent
This podcast is truly incredible. At a time when the global pandemic has made international travel off limits, this show manages to bring the world’s cultures, histories and landscapes alive in a way that feels as though you are there yourself. It is well produced, engaging and easy to listen to. Saleem Reshamwala is an excellent narrator and story teller. The show is meticulously researched with details that are frequently mind blowing. It is reminiscent of Anthony Bourdain’s work but with the food porn replaced by deep dives into the loves of the people and places Saleem explores.

What kind of parents let’s their kids kill people?
Most messed up show I’ve listened to! Those kids need to be saved from their sick parents allowing them to learn to kill and loot.

    Perfect addition to Geography class
I stumbled on this podcast and I am so happy we listened. Our first episode was Rapa Nui...great listen that lead us down a few rabbit holes.

    So good!!!
A real fun, informative, and well produced podcast. The host doesn’t just read a script but it’s also not just endless banter, a really great balance. What a great way to “travel” during the pandemic.

John is a great host ;)

    Coincidence? I think not! Lol
So today, 11/8/20, this podcast came up in a “you may be interested” type situation and I clicked on it right away. Imagine my surprise when I clicked on the Oct 27 episode, it was detailing the people and places I had just seen on my recent travels out West! You actually answered a few questions I had along that journey so thank you for this piece! Crazy thing is, I actually returned home on the day this episode aired😳😂🙌🏼🔮🌞🌚

    The new 99PI
In my opinion this is one of the best podcasts out there. Incredibly informative, amazing production quality. It reminds me of 99% Invisible from a year or so ago when they were at their peak. This podcast could become my #1 recommendation to people who want to “try podcasts.”

As an avid traveler in times of COVID this podcast is so fulfilling. The Nairobi episode brought me back to my time living in Eastern Africa and made my heart ache in such a good way! Highly recommend

    Loved the mantua story
Really enjoyed this podcast in particular the mantua story. All the other ones were also well told. The google stuff was a bit awkward. But understand the need to pay for the podcast.
  • wanderingWB
    Excellent subjects with straightforward delivery!
Love the details without a lot of banter to clutter up the subject with attempts at “charm”.

    Need this during corona
Much needed podcast during the time when we can’t travel on our own. I can casually listen but feel I have learned so much after finishing it. Looking forward to season two.

    Take me away
In all your stories, I am traveling and learning about another world I will never get to see. But in my minds eye with the expertise of your knowledge, and knowledge of your guests, I am in all those places you introduce to us. Thank you so much. Love ❤️

    Travel with awareness
Glad to find this podcast. Sort of unhappy to hear Target and other corporate chain stores being praised on the Mantua, NJ episode. That is my only caveat. Excellent podcast!

    Such a great journey!
Best.commercials.ever. Every podcast should be this integrative with their financial supporters. I’m ready for another episode after those first two! Pindrop is taking us all on a journey while we remain safe at home during the pandemic.

    Loved it!
Great podcast on the various amazing element of Bangkok. Loved the advertisement too. I thought it was just parting the story. Can’t wait to the next episode!

    PinDrop—Bangkok
I was looking forward to hearing this podcast, as I had a brother who lived in Bangkok for 3 years and loved it. To my utter dismay and frustration, I quit listening after 17 minutes. Nowadays, there is way too much: “and then I was like, and then he was like, and then we all were like.” Like, I was like—bored and distracted trying to make sense of it or to even take it seriously. I know it’s hard to buck “cool” cultural trends, but...just sayin’.
  • Pho'Life
Beautifully well written and expertly hosted!!
The host, Saleem Reshamwala, is a great story teller and guide! Right off the bat, you can hear his smile and his curiosity for the places and people featured in the show. Perfect length. Great pacing. Seriously impressed by this pilot episode and can’t wait to for the next ones!!
