    Excellent Podcast
As someone you had spent several decades studying twentieth century political, military, and diplomatic history, I always find something of interest in Nick’s programs. He covers both well known and obscure topics. And he has great book recommendations. I’ve been listening for years. Keep up the good work.

    Low volume
I have to turn my volume all the way up to hear you, but then my ears are blasted when the commercial comes on.

    I love it, but...
There’s a weird clicking sound every so often! I’ll forget about it occasionally, then start focusing on it, then forget again... rinse, repeat. Great info- but what’s the click?!

Great podcast, audio could use some work
Love the podcast. Great perspective and research. Only thing keeping from 5 stars is the uneven audio quality and volumes, as well as ad interruptions mid-sentence.

    Always a Great Listen
My favorite thing about this pod is that when I see a new episode, even if it's a topic I might not be interested in, I enjoy the insight the host brings. It doesn't matter if it's Nazi propaganda prior to WWII or the US Labor movement after the war, or Nixon and China. The shotgun approach of talking about any topic is great and I learn about stuff I didn't even have a passing knowledge of previously.

    Wonderful, thoughtful history podcast!
This is a wonderful history podcast - it offers not just an entryway into major historical topics, but also pushes the listener to approach the material with a historian's sensibility. Really fantastic!

Very thorough but related chunks of history offered up each week
I listen to hundreds of podcasts, and this is one that is increasingly on my "must hear" list. I teach American civics to a class of international students and find the podcast is helping me fill in some of the gaps that my own previous history classes rarely dealt with. Right now I'm trying to get straight the origins and exit points of the two World Wars in order to get a better sense of how the countries my students represent (most are from either the Middle East, Africa, the Caribbean or South America) came to be formed or transformed as a result of the wars. World War I in particular has been a blind spot for me. I like how the podcast breaks up major "events" into sections each from different and often competitive angles so as to encourage us to see the whole complicated picture as an open field of discovery rather than a closed field of deadening and final conclusions.

    Great narrative drive
Nick Shepley has a great sense of narrative drive. He also does an admirable job of choosing topics of the appropriate scope for each podcast, so that he can showcase details and contingencies without drowning in them.

    Great podcast
I like history and enjoy learning. Randomly found this podcast searching for history oriented podcasts and I really enjoy it. The host's presentation is detailed and nuanced which really makes it quite interesting. I also like that the podcast seems to cover a lot of 20th century events which is very illuminating. It's also interesting as an American as the host is from England and thus you get a somewhat different perspective than what you usually have in the USA.

    Amazing Explanations of History
Explaining History does an amazing job of bringing elements of history to life. I have found myself fascinated while listening to aspects of history I would never have thought to choose. I really enjoy the diverse selection of topics that Nick chooses.

    Very informative
I also came across this podcast recently. I have a special interest in World War II and the Holocaust. The host makes references to some great books on these topics both in the book review segments and in the regular podcasts. Looking forward to learning much more from this show!

    Informative entertainment
I stumbled across this podcast recently and decided to give it a shot. I downloaded a few random episodes to get a feel for the style of the narrative. I was thoroughly drawn in to the accessible yet informative nature of the podcast. The host does a stellar job of explaining each topic and not getting too caught up in tangents that derail the narrative. I find myself enthralled by the host and the way he describes events of the past. Well done podcast that I highly recommend to all!
